Welcome

WELCOME TO THE 46TH IEEE PVSC

The IEEE Photovoltaic Specialist Conference (PVSC) is proud to host the 46th PVSC June 16-21, 2019 at the Sheraton Grand in Chicago, Illinois.

We live at a special time when solar electricity has become cost competitive with conventional electricity in many locations, enabling a remarkable change in attitudes about adoption of solar. Bloomberg New Energy Finance predicts that by 2050 half of the world’s electricity will be generated from wind and solar. The RE100 global initiative is rapidly gaining momentum with 100% renewable energy commitments from 176 companies, led by Ikea and Swiss Re and rapidly growing to represent a substantial fraction of the world’s energy use. Recently, Xcel Energy announced plans to move to 100% carbon-free electricity generation, including solar electricity as a foundational piece. This recent announcement, which is based on an analysis that may convince other utilities to follow, motivated our choice of Keynote presentation this year. The 46th IEEE PVSC will help to provide a research foundation for this larger movement with over 900 papers from around the world, reflecting an increasingly broad set of research topics as photovoltaic specialists strive to understand not only how to make the most efficient and reliable solar cells/modules at the lowest cost, but how to integrate them into an energy system that will power the world in a sustainable way.

The PVSCs have a rich tradition of bringing together students, innovators, researchers and PV leaders in a vibrant and highly integrative forum to share information, gain knowledge, strengthen collaborations and move forward photovoltaic science and technology from basic and applied research into large scale manufacturing and deployments. This year’s technical program encompasses 12 abstract submission areas that cover the entire spectrum of technical activities in photovoltaic science and engineering and provides a unique opportunity to share and discuss the latest PV-related developments from around the world. In addition to an exceptional Technical Program, the 46th PVSC will include an exciting Tutorial Program, taught by world’s leading PV specialists, and a High School Solar Projects competition, giving PV researchers the opportunity to interact with the next generation of researchers.

The conference Exhibition will showcase the latest developments in PV characterization and manufacturing equipment, and is set to further enhance attendee awareness on latest tools and instrumentation as well as to facilitate exchange between scientists, technical experts and exhibitors.

Social gatherings and networking events provide opportunities to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. The Conference Banquet on Thursday evening will be held at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry, featuring interactive exhibits that include simulation of storms and waves, whispering gallery, and many, many opportunities to stimulate young and old.

On behalf of the 46th IEEE PVSC Conference Committee and the Cherry Committee, I welcome you to the 46th PVSC in Chicago!
